Vacation is tough stuff. There's the driving and the eating and the sleeping. There's finding things to do and meeting people. It's intense and so worth it!
I was fortunate enough to be able to take a trip back to Florida to catch up with family and friends for the holidays. Thanksgiving awarded me three pies for my efforts (two of which were pumpkin). More news about what Christmas and New Years (my winter holidays of choice) will bring.
So this week, my tips and tricks for making vacation as smooth as possible! With some help from my kitty of course.
You must prepare.
Preparation is key. Pack the clothes, pack the snacks, pack the necessary electronics. Knowing the schedule ahead of time helps so moments can be made for work and relaxation between obligations. Lists are always super helpful, at least for types like me whose thoughts go everywhere all at once when trying to think of everything.
You must adapt.
No matter what plans are made, even if nothing is forgotten, a lot still remains outside your control. Weather, other people, last minute changes. Being able to mold yourself to new situations and roll with the punches (like the kitty finding unconventional perches above) is key to full satisfaction in any trip.
You must make time for yourself.
Like a cat who needs to find a fortress of solitude, the intrepid vacationer must make time to relax and recharge (or get work done if they choose to stay productive). The amount of private time one needs varies by their personality. Techniques for making this personal necessity vary even more. My strategy is waking up at ridiculous hours of the morning before anyone else is up and finding an unoccupied area to settle for a block of time. Whatever way you figure it out, protect that chunk of personal space like a tiger.
While I originally meant for this post to be a little tongue in cheek, bits of self-care sincerity snuck their way in. What are your tips and tricks for a smooth vacation? Is preferred method more of a staycation? Let me know in the comments!
And last but not least, if you need good reading material during your down time on your e-reader of choice (laptop, mobile device, actual e-reader), consider checking out Iron & Ivy.
